The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched an induction programme for its newly appointed statutory officials for the 2026–2030 term, aimed at strengthening their strategic leadership, institutional coherence, and the effective implementation of the Community’s priorities.

This four-day programme, taking place in Abuja from September 1 to 4, 2026, brings together the newly appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. General Birame Diop, the Vice President, the five Commissioners, the Directors General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) and GIABA, and the Auditor General of ECOWAS Institutions.

The programme is designed to ensure that the new leaders assume their duties with a shared understanding of the Community’s institutional mandate, strategic direction, and the constantly evolving regional context. It offers statutory officials the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the political, economic, security, and socio-developmental landscape of West Africa, while enhancing their capacity to provide effective strategic leadership and contribute to the achievement of ECOWAS objectives.

Former ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas and former Commissioner for Administration and Finance Ms. Rahamatu Kady Saccoh shared their experiences, lessons learned, and best practices to help new leaders advance regional integration, peace, stability, and sustainable development, with a particular focus on the Community’s institutional architecture and strategic priorities.

The program also aims to foster a shared vision of leadership and strengthen the capacity of statutory officials to translate the Community’s priorities into concrete actions and measurable results for the people of West Africa.
