The Centre for Community Law hosts a high-level discussion on environmental stewardship and regional capacity building in Deep Sea Mining

In furtherance of its SDG 14 commitment of “Education and awareness“, on June 19, 2025, the Centre for Community Law hosted Mr. Musa Animashaun, a U.S.-based IHO Category-A Hydrographer and Geomatics Specialist, for a thought-provoking discussion on the prospects and challenges of deep seabed resource development in the ECOWAS region.
The session explored regional seabed potential, governance gaps, and lessons from global good practice, while emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and regional capacity building. The conversation formed part of the Centre’s ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue around international ocean law, sustainable blue economy development, and regional awareness.
The Centre is pleased with the feedback it has so far received, all of which confirm that Mr Animashaun did justice to the topic of the discussion: “Balancing Economic Opportunities and Environmental Sustainability: Deep Seabed Resource Exploitation by West African States”.
